Omega-3 comes in many forms and is a very popular supplement. It is phenomenal for almost everyone to take, and essential for every active person. While fish oil is most known for its effectiveness for heart health, and joint support, it also has a plethora of other benefits including decreasing inflammation, eye health, brain, cognitive and memory support, and supports healthy hair, skin and nails.

When it comes to fish oil, like most supplements, quality matters. It is important to choose a high-quality fish oil which means checking purity, sourcing, sustainability, and also check for certifications like IFOS (International Fish Oil Standards) or MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) which ensure quality. It is also very important to choose a fish oil that is free from contaminants like heavy metals, such as mercury or lead, and PCBs. Look for brands that are third-party tested.

Here are the basics on how you can incorporate it into your routine:

Dosage: A clinical dose of fish oil is 1000mg/day and is best when the 1000mg are coming from EPA and DHA. Avoid fish oils with fillers and additives, which are common in lower quality fish oil. Having 1000mg of EPA and DHA is the best for getting all the benefits of fish oil. It is most effective when taken daily.

Forms: Fish oil comes in multiple forms such as capsules, liquid, gummies, etc. but the best one to take is the capsule or liquid. Liquid may not taste the best for those who are sensitive to tastes and texture, and it is important to check out the label and avoid any with additives. If you are nervous about taking fish oil due to the taste, be sure to get one with an enteric coating which will help prevent it from repeating on you.

Timing: Fish oil can be taken at any time of the day, however it is ideal to take it with other supplements you are taking, as fish oil will aid the absorption of them.

Who can take it: Fish oil is shown to be safe for everyone. Research suggests that DHA is very beneficial for cognitive development in kids. If you are pregnant, or have any other health concerns, it is always important to check with your PCP.
